The reporter took the chart and skipped the quote entirely

We pitched a study two ways to see what reporters actually use. One pitch led with a quotable line from our expert. The other led with a single clean chart, embeddable, our logo small in the corner.

The quote-led pitch worked when the reporter was writing an opinion or trend piece and needed a human voice. Three used the quote — but a quote is easy to lift without a link. Two of those three named us with no link at all; attribution doesn't require a hyperlink.

The chart-led pitch behaved differently. A chart is hard to recreate, so reporters embed the original — and the embed naturally carries a link back to the source page, plus the logo travels into every republish. Four outlets used the chart, all four linked, and one had the logo sit in a piece that got syndicated five more times.

"Your quote I can paraphrase," one editor said. "Your chart I have to credit."

Lesson: a quote earns you a voice and easy pickup, but it's frictionless to use without crediting you with a link. A visual asset is harder to copy, so it pulls the link and carries your logo by default. Lead with the quote for narrative pieces. Lead with the chart whenever the link is the goal.
