The coverage report that hid a backlink disaster
An agency sent a client a triumphant coverage report: 38 pieces of press in one quarter. The client was happy until their own SEO lead checked the links. Of 38 placements, 31 were nofollow or had no link at all. The campaign looked huge and moved nothing for search visibility.
The agency had optimized for the screenshot, not the link. Coverage counts feel great in a slide; they don't tell you whether anything passed authority to the site.
We changed the scorecard. Every placement now gets logged with its link status — followed, nofollow, unlinked-mention — and the unlinked-mention pile became a worklist, not a footnote. A polite "thanks for the mention, would you add our link as the source?" is one of the highest-yield emails in PR.
That reclaim pass alone converted 12 unlinked mentions into live followed links in three weeks. The next quarter, we targeted outlets with followed-link policies up front and landed 19 placements, 15 of them followed.
Lesson: 38 pieces of coverage with no links is a beautiful report and a wasted quarter. Count the links, not the logos — and chase every unlinked mention, because that's a placement you already earned and forgot to collect.
