HowTo markup is no longer a dependable route to a Google rich result. Keep it only when it accurately describes the page; do not expect the schema itself to create a visible search enhancement.
There is no one-to-one replacement. Use:
— Article or WebPage markup for the tutorial as a document.
— VideoObject when a real instructional video is embedded.
— FAQPage only for genuine, visible questions and answers.
— BreadcrumbList to clarify the page’s place in the site structure.
The main replacement is better page structure, not another schema type. Show prerequisites, tools, numbered steps, warnings, and the expected outcome in visible HTML. Keep the JSON-LD consistent with that content. Do not hide steps in markup, turn every tutorial into an FAQ, or combine unrelated procedures in one entity.
Treat HowTo as descriptive metadata, not a traffic lever. Build the clearest step-by-step page first, then add only the markup that truthfully fits its format.
