Myth: exclusivity is no big deal if you like the brand
Liking the product doesn't make exclusivity cheap. It's one of the costliest clauses because it blocks future income.
Exclusivity = a promise not to work with competitors for a set time.
Why it matters: a broad clause can lock out an entire category for months, killing deals you haven't booked yet.
Simple example: "no competing skincare brands for 6 months" means six months of skincare offers you must decline — that's real lost revenue.
Protect yourself two ways: narrow it ("this exact competitor only") or shorten it ("30 days"). Either way, charge an exclusivity fee.
Your move: ask "which brands count as competitors, and for how long?" before you agree to anything.
