Ch. 16: The Niche That Was Too Small to Survive
Between sites two and three I tried a micro-niche I was sure was genius: ferret-care-pro.com. Ultra-specific, low competition, passionate owners. Everything the 'go niche' advice praises.
It ranked beautifully. Month 3 I owned page one for a dozen terms. And it earned $34/mo and never moved past it.
The problem wasn't rankings — I had them. The problem was the entire addressable market was tiny AND the commercial intent was weak. Ferret owners buy a $30 cage and some food, then they're done. No recurring high-ticket purchases, thin affiliate programs, $6 display RPM. I'd ranked #1 for a niche that simply didn't have enough money flowing through it.
There's a floor below which a niche can't pay you no matter how dominant you are. Ferrets were below it.
I mothballed it after 4 months and $134 total. A clean, cheap failure.
Lesson banked: rankings aren't revenue — verify the MONEY in a niche before the competition. Total addressable spend (audience size x purchase frequency x basket value x affiliate rates) has to clear a floor, or you'll win the SERP and still go broke.
