Ch. 14: Waiting Out an Update That Wasn't Coming Back
Classic advice after a core update: 'Don't touch anything, just wait for the next update to recover.' My outdoor-cooking site got hit in a March update — 30k sessions to 11k, revenue $420 to $150/mo. I waited. And waited. Three updates passed. Nothing recovered.
That's when I learned the myth: passive waiting only works if the update was a mistake. Mine wasn't — it correctly flagged 40 thin, affiliate-stuffed 'best X' pages I'd churned out.
I stopped waiting and started cutting. Deleted 38 thin pages, consolidated 12 into 4 genuinely tested guides, added my own grill-temp data. The next core update finally lifted me — because I gave it something better to re-rank. Back to 26k sessions, $360/mo.
— Recovery isn't a clock; it's a content debt you pay down
— If the hit was deserved, waiting changes nothing
Lesson banked: Updates don't forgive you for waiting — they reward you for fixing.
