Ch. 11: The Bounce Rate I Chased for Nothing
A 'CRO expert' told me my 78% bounce rate was killing rankings and I needed to obsess over it. So for two months on my recipe site I added related-post grids, popups, autoplay video — anything to drag bounce down.
It worked on the metric: bounce dropped to 54%. Rankings? Unchanged. Revenue actually fell from $260 to $215/mo because the cluttered pages buried my ad units and slowed load times.
Bounce rate isn't a Google ranking signal — and a 'high bounce' on a recipe page often means the visitor got the recipe and left happy. I'd been optimizing a vanity number while degrading the real experience.
I ripped out the clutter, page speed recovered, revenue went to $295/mo.
— Bounce can mean satisfaction, not failure
— Don't sacrifice UX to move a metric Google ignores
Lesson banked: Optimize for the task completed, not for the analytics screenshot.
