Geo Pulse #54 — In-country hosting vs global CDN: which buys you the GEO?

Geo Pulse #54 — In-country hosting vs global CDN: which buys you the GEO?
Theme of the week: 'just put it on a CDN' isn't always the right call.

— Global CDN (Cloudflare, Fastly) → solves latency for static assets everywhere; the default and usually enough. But your origin location still shows in some local trust and legal signals.
— In-country origin hosting → matters where the law or the market demands data residency (Russia, China, parts of MENA) or where a local IP is a genuine ranking nudge for that ccTLD.
— China specifically → a CDN without an ICP license and mainland PoPs is effectively blocked or throttled at the GFW. This is the one GEO where 'global CDN' quietly fails.
— Edge compute → use when content must vary by country fast; static CDN alone can't personalize without cache fragmentation.

Rule: CDN for speed, local origin for law and China. Don't conflate the two problems.
