Geo Pulse #56 — Localizing form fields and address formats
Theme of the week: a US-shaped form fails everywhere else.
The field-by-field audit that cuts form abandonment:
→ Names: don't force first/last split — many cultures have one name, or family-name-first ordering.
→ Address: drop 'State' as required outside countries that use it; postcode is optional or absent in several GEOs (Ireland's old system, UAE).
→ Phone: pre-fill the country code from GEO, validate against the local number length, accept local formats.
→ Postcode/ZIP: validation rules differ wildly — UK is alphanumeric, Japan uses 7 digits with a hyphen.
→ Date format: show DD/MM vs MM/DD by locale, or use an unambiguous date-picker.
→ Keep required fields to the minimum the offer truly needs; every extra field costs conversions.
Reference: the UK GOV.UK Design System on international addresses and Google's libaddressinput open dataset of country formats.
