A breadcrumb trail should show a page’s place in the site hierarchy, not just repeat the URL. In JSON-LD, use BreadcrumbList with an itemListElement for each level: home, category, subcategory, and the current page when appropriate.
Before publishing, check four details:
• position starts at 1 and increases sequentially.
• Each item has a clear name.
• Linked items use absolute, canonical URLs.
• The markup matches the breadcrumb trail visible to users.
The most common mistake is mixing navigation logic with URL structure. A product can live at /sale/item while its visible trail is Home → Shoes → Running Shoes. Mark up the user-facing hierarchy, not every folder in the URL.
Also test templates with edge cases: a product with no subcategory, a paginated archive, and a page moved to a new section. Remove empty items, duplicate levels, and stale URLs. Validate the rendered page, not only a copied JSON-LD snippet.
Keep the hierarchy short, consistent, and visible. Breadcrumb markup works best when it describes a structure users can actually follow.
