The salon owner who rewrote the one field that doesn't rank
Meet a salon owner in Denver who spent a weekend agonizing over her Business Profile description. She crammed it with keywords: 'best balayage Denver, top hair salon Denver, affordable haircuts Denver.' Read like a ransom note. Rankings didn't budge.
The thing nobody tells you: the GBP business description has almost no direct ranking weight. Google doesn't use it as a relevance signal the way it uses your name, category, and reviews. She'd optimized the one place keywords don't help.
Where they do help is in your Google review responses, your services list, and the justifications Google pulls from review text to show under your listing ('Tina mentioned balayage').
We rewrote her description for humans — warm, clear, the vibe of the place. Then we loaded every individual service into the services menu with real descriptions, and started replying to reviews using natural service language.
Within six weeks, 'balayage Denver' searches surfaced her listing with a justification line pulled straight from a client's review. Booked appointments rose from 90 to 134 a month.
The lesson: stop keyword-stuffing the description — pour that effort into services, review replies, and the fields Google actually reads.
