Case #043: Native and push, same offer, different planets

Case #043: Native and push, same offer, different planets

A sweepstakes offer, $2,200 budget, split between native traffic and push notifications. People treat them as interchangeable cheap traffic. They are not.

Push: $1,100 spent, $1,430 back, 30% up. Clicks were $0.011, dirt cheap, mostly old subscriber lists. Conversion came fast and front-loaded — 70% of revenue landed in the first 48 hours, then the lists fatigued and CTR collapsed from 2.1% to 0.4%.

Native: $1,100 spent, $1,290 back, 17% up. Clicks cost $0.34 — thirty times more. But the traffic was readers, not reflexes. Conversion came slow and steady, the campaign never fatigued in two weeks, and average order value ran 22% higher because native pre-sells with an article.

The split is about campaign shape. Push is a sprinter — explosive, then dead, perfect for time-boxed offers and fast testing. Native is a diesel — slow to warm, expensive per click, but it doesn't burn out and it attracts a buyer who reads before clicking.

Final arc: push won the ROI line this round, but it required three fresh list-buys to keep alive. Native held one campaign steady the whole fortnight and would've won any test longer than 20 days.

The lesson: push pays you today and abandons you tomorrow, native makes you wait and then stays — match the traffic's metabolism to the offer's shelf life.
