Source-to-offer matching: the playbook for not forcing bad pairs

Source-to-offer matching: the playbook for not forcing bad pairs

Half my early losses were great offers on the wrong traffic. Here's how I match before I launch.

The setup
I had a high-intent finance offer paying $40/lead and kept losing money on it.

The move
Match on three axes before committing budget:
— Intent: high-payout finance/insurance wants high-intent (search, in-feed native with strong pre-sell), not impulse pop traffic.
— Speed of decision: sweepstakes and dating convert fast, fit interruptive sources (pops, push). Considered purchases don't.
— User mindset on the source: push = re-engagement, native = discovery, search = active demand. Pick offers that fit the mindset.

Grid it: list your offer's intent level, then only test sources in the matching tier.

The numbers
Finance offer on pops: -50% ROI over $180. Same offer on native with an advertorial pre-sell: +22% over the next $300.

The lesson
A good offer on mismatched traffic looks exactly like a bad offer. You'll blame the wrong thing.

What I'd do differently
Build the source-tier grid once, reuse it on every new offer. Figures illustrative.
