Case #038: When the smartlink beat my own judgment
Mixed mainstream pop traffic, $1,900 to spend, a dating vertical. The question was whether to run a single direct offer I'd hand-picked or hand the traffic to a network smartlink that auto-rotates dozens of offers by geo and device.
Direct offer, my pick: $950 spent, $1,120 back, 18% up. Respectable. I was proud of the offer.
Smartlink, same traffic source split off: $950 spent, $1,460 back, 54% up. It crushed me. Not because the offers were better — because the rotation matched tier-3 geos I'd have flat-out rejected to offers paying $0.40 a lead that I never knew existed.
But the smartlink hid everything. I couldn't see which offer converted, couldn't optimize creatives to it, couldn't negotiate a bump. It was a black box paying me well to stay ignorant. When I tried to scale the winning geos, I had no levers — the network re-routed traffic and my ROI sagged to 31% the next week with no explanation.
Final arc: smartlink won the cold-start sprint by 36 points. Direct offer won the marathon once I'd mined the smartlink's data and rebuilt the top three geos manually — that campaign settled at 68% up.
The lesson: a smartlink is a great scout and a terrible general — use it to discover where the money hides, then go take that ground yourself.
