Case #061: The tracker that ate my margin
We started a nutra campaign on cloud-hosted Voluum because setup took twenty minutes. Day 1 looked clean: $1,200 in, $1,510 back, 25% up. Then we scaled to 40,000 clicks a day and the invoice arrived.
Voluum bills per event. At our volume that line item alone hit $0.0021 per click — $84 a day, $2,520 across the month. On a campaign netting $11,400 profit, the tracker quietly took 22% of it.
We migrated to self-hosted Keitaro on a $40 VPS. Same traffic, same offers. Tracking cost dropped to that flat $40 plus $30 of my own time keeping it patched. We tested redirect speed both ways — cloud Voluum answered in 180ms from EU, our Keitaro box in 60ms because it sat in the same datacenter as the lander. Faster redirects, 4% fewer bounced clicks.
The tradeoff was real, not free. Two weekends I spent fighting a Postgres lock when the box choked at 80k clicks. Voluum would have absorbed that without me knowing.
Final arc: month one on Voluum, $11,400 net. Month two on Keitaro, same offers, $14,100 net — the difference was almost entirely the tracker bill plus the speed lift.
The lesson: cloud trackers are rent you stop noticing until volume turns the meter into a co-owner of your campaign.
