Device Fingerprinting vs IP Filtering for Lead Fraud

Device Fingerprinting vs IP Filtering for Lead Fraud

What it is: Two anti-fraud layers for forex lead funnels. IP filtering blocks datacenter, VPN, and known-bad ranges (MaxMind, IPQualityScore). Fingerprinting (FingerprintJS, SEON) builds a device hash from browser/hardware signals to catch repeat fraudsters.

Best for IP filtering: First-pass cleanup. Cheap, fast, kills obvious bot and proxy traffic before it costs you a CRM slot.

Pros (IP)
— Instant block of datacenter and known VPN ranges
— Low cost per check; easy to bolt onto a prelander
— Geo-mismatch detection (claimed DE, IP in PK)

Cons (IP)
— Residential proxies sail right through
— Legit mobile users on carrier NAT get false-flagged

Fingerprinting catches what IP misses: the same device submitting 40 leads across rotating IPs. SEON layers email/phone enrichment on top, which brokers love because it predicts FTD quality, not just bot-ness.

Who should skip fingerprinting: Low-volume buyers with clean direct traffic. The integration effort and per-check cost outweigh the fraud you'd catch. IP filtering covers you.

Verdict: IP first, fingerprint for repeat fraud.
