A playbook for finding and reconnecting orphan pages
Question: how many of your pages receive zero internal links, and how do you reintegrate them without spam? A clean procedure.
— Step 1: crawl the site, then cross-reference the crawl's discovered URLs against your XML sitemap. Pages in the sitemap but not in the crawl's link graph are orphans.
— Step 2: confirm by checking each orphan has zero in-links in the crawler's inlink report.
— Step 3: for each orphan, find 2–3 topically relevant parent pages by matching shared entities, not just keywords.
— Step 4: add one contextual in-body link from each parent, with a descriptive anchor.
— Step 5: add the orphan to a relevant hub or category page so it sits inside a cluster.
— Step 6: re-crawl to confirm crawl depth to the page dropped to 3 clicks or fewer.
Method note: orphan detection via sitemap-vs-crawl diff; click-depth from the crawler's report.
Caveat: pages can be reachable to users via search yet orphaned to crawlers — fixing internal links helps discovery and equity, but won't rescue genuinely thin content.
Confidence: high
