A sequencing playbook: when to go deep vs. broad on a new topic

A sequencing playbook: when to go deep vs. broad on a new topic

Question: should a new site publish one deep pillar or twenty shallow pages first? Correlation studies on topical coverage suggest a sequencing rule.

— Step 1: define your seed subtopic narrowly — one cluster, not the whole niche.
— Step 2: publish 5–8 tightly interlinked pages that fully cover that one cluster before expanding. Completeness within a cluster appears to matter more than total page count early on.
— Step 3: only expand to an adjacent cluster once the first ranks on page 1 for its head term — that's your signal the cluster is 'accepted'.
— Step 4: avoid scattering single pages across unrelated clusters; thin coverage across many topics dilutes the authority signal.
— Step 5: repeat cluster-by-cluster.

Method note: pattern observed in coverage-vs-ranking correlation studies and reproduced informally across small-site case logs.

Caveat: correlation, not causation — sites that complete clusters may differ in other ways (budget, links). Sequencing is a reasonable default, not a proven cause.

Confidence: low
