A checklist to structure answers for AI Overview and snippet capture
Question: how do you format an answer so extraction systems can lift it cleanly? A concrete formatting pass.
— Step 1: identify the exact question. Match the phrasing in a PAA box or 'People Also Ask' tree, not your paraphrase.
— Step 2: answer in the first 1–2 sentences directly under a question-form heading. Extraction favors answer-adjacent-to-question structure.
— Step 3: keep the core answer to 40–55 words — the observed length band for most featured snippets.
— Step 4: follow with a definition sentence using 'is/are' for entity grounding.
— Step 5: if the answer is a process, use an ordered list; if a comparison, a table. Extractors map structure to query type.
— Step 6: avoid pronouns in the answer block so the lifted text stands alone.
Method note: word-count bands from teardown of ~60 featured snippets; structure rules from observed AI Overview citations.
Caveat: AI Overview citation behavior shifts frequently and varies by query class — formatting raises odds, it doesn't guarantee capture.
Confidence: medium
