HLR Lookup vs OTP Verification: Lead Quality Gates

HLR Lookup vs OTP Verification: Lead Quality Gates

What it is: Two ways to confirm a forex lead's phone is real. HLR (Home Location Register) lookup queries the carrier network to see if a number is live and reachable. OTP sends a one-time code the user must enter.

Best for HLR: Passive filtering where you don't want friction. Tools like HLR Lookups, Vonage, or MessageBird check live/ported status with no user action.

Pros (HLR)
— Zero friction; runs server-side, lead never notices
— Detects ported, disconnected, or roaming numbers in real time
— Cheap at scale ($0.003-0.008 per query)

Cons (HLR)
— Confirms the line exists, not that the human owns it
— Some carriers return stale or cached status

OTP proves possession: the person holding the phone entered the code. That's far stronger for FTD quality and cuts fraud-flagged leads at the broker. But it adds a step that drops 15-30% of lukewarm leads.

Who should skip OTP: Top-of-funnel buyers optimizing for lead volume on a CPL deal. The drop-off torches your numbers. Use HLR, let the call center qualify the rest.

Verdict: HLR for volume, OTP for quality.
