The query reply and the cold pitch went out the same week
A fintech founder I advised wanted credit-card data coverage. We ran two motions in parallel. One: replying to journalist queries (the old HARO-style requests for sources, now scattered across Qwoted, Featured, SourceBottle). Two: a cold, researched pitch to three reporters we'd read for months.
The query replies were fast — eleven sent in a morning, two used inside a week, both as a single quoted line buried mid-article. Useful, dofollow, but generic. The cold pitch took four days to build because it carried our own number: a 19% rise in chargebacks among under-25s, pulled from anonymized account data. That one landed a standalone piece in a trade outlet, with our founder as the named expert.
"The query stuff reads like everyone else's," one reporter told us later. "Your chargeback figure I couldn't get anywhere."
Lesson: query platforms reward speed and volume — use them to stay in the flow when you have nothing proprietary. Cold pitching rewards a number only you own. Don't make them compete; they answer different questions. The query gets you a sentence this week. The asset gets you the byline.
