The "first ever" claim that a reporter disproved in one search

The "first ever" claim that a reporter disproved in one search

A biotech startup pitched itself as "the first company to" do a particular assay. A science reporter took the claim seriously enough to spend ninety seconds on it — and found two prior players. The pitch didn't just fail; it cost the brand credibility with a reporter who now distrusted every future claim.

Unverifiable superlatives are landmines. "First," "only," "leading" — if a reporter can puncture them with one search, they will, and they'll remember you as the brand that exaggerates.

We banned bare superlatives and replaced them with defensible, sourced framing: not "first ever," but "the first to receive [specific clearance] for [specific use], per [named registry]." Specific, narrow, checkable, true.

The re-pitch made a tightly-scoped first-claim that actually held up. The same skeptical reporter verified it, found it accurate, and ran it — and because the claim was precise, the piece read as authoritative rather than promotional. It anchored 6 placements and a Wikipedia citation that still feeds the brand's entity profile.

Lesson: a superlative a reporter can disprove in one search will be disproven in one search. Narrow the claim until it's bulletproof — "first to do X under Y" beats "first ever" every time, because it survives the click.
