How do I fix a thin category page step by step?
'Q: My category pages are just a grid of products with no text. Should I add a wall of copy?'
Short answer: No wall. Add a short intro, smart on-page links, and let the product grid do the ranking work.
The longer version: Do these five.
— Write 80–150 words of intro above or below the grid answering 'what's here and how to choose.' Not 800 words of stuffed keywords.
— Add 4–6 internal links to subcategories and key filtered views ('waterproof', 'under $50') as real anchor links, not just JS filters.
— Ensure products are server-rendered in the HTML, not lazy-loaded only on scroll — crawlers need to see them.
— Add a short FAQ block targeting the questions real buyers ask.
— Set a self-referencing canonical and confirm it's in your sitemap.
Example: a category with zero text ranked page 3; adding a 120-word intro plus six subcategory links moved it to page 1 in six weeks.
Rule of thumb: thin means missing context, not missing word count.
