Building partner pipeline through a single champion who can leave

Building partner pipeline through a single champion who can leave

An underdiscussed fragility: a partner relationship — or a partner-sourced deal — that lives entirely inside one person's relationships. When that champion changes roles, the pipeline they carried evaporates with no institutional continuity.

The single-point-of-failure pattern:
— One enthusiastic contact at a partner firm drives all referrals; their colleagues never engage with your program.
— On the buyer side, a partner-introduced champion advocates internally, but if they leave mid-cycle the deal stalls (multithreading research consistently links single-threaded deals to lower close rates).
— The relationship was never institutionalized, so departure means starting over.

The fix — engineer for multithreading and continuity:
— Within partner firms, deliberately build relationships across multiple roles, not just your one fan.
— On partner-sourced deals, push to multithread the buying committee early rather than relying on a single champion.
— Document relationship maps in the CRM so a personnel change is a transition, not a loss.

Caveat: over-multithreading too early can feel intrusive and dilute a strong champion's momentum. Sequence it — earn the champion, then expand through them.

Open question: if your single most productive partner contact left tomorrow, how much of their pipeline would survive the week?
