Q: For staging and production, should I use two properties or one property with filters?
A: Separate properties — filters aren't built for this.
— Use two GA4 properties: one for production, one for dev/staging, each with its own Measurement ID. Clean data, zero risk of test traffic polluting reports.
— GA4's data filters (Admin → Data Settings → Data Filters) only handle internal/developer traffic exclusion by IP or the 'debug_mode' flag — they're not a full environment split.
— Bonus: route the right ID per environment in GTM with a Lookup Table variable on hostname.
TL;DR: Two properties keep prod data clean; data filters only exclude internal traffic, not whole environments. Switch IDs by hostname in GTM.
