Q: Should I publish the pillar page first, or the cluster posts first?
Short answer: publish 3-4 cluster posts first, then the pillar — unless you're targeting a head term with real volume, where the order flips.
The pillar is a hub that links down to supporting posts. If it ships before any clusters exist, it links to nothing and Google sees a thin overview with no depth underneath it. Cluster-first means by the time the pillar goes live, it already has real pages to point at.
In practice: write clusters around the specific questions (long-tail, lower competition), let them get indexed, then build the pillar as the page that ties them together and absorbs the broad term. Exception: if the head keyword is genuinely winnable fast, ship a thin pillar early to claim the URL, then backfill clusters within two weeks.
