Warning ladder vs instant ban: enforcement by intent
Moderation tools split on one question: was this a mistake or a choice?
Warning ladder (strike system):
☐ Use for members who broke a rule they might not know.
☐ Strength: educates, keeps good people who slipped, feels fair.
☐ Weakness: slow, gameable by bad actors who ride the strikes, demands consistent tracking.
Instant ban:
☐ Use for clear bad-intent: scams, spam rings, harassment, raids.
☐ Strength: protects the room immediately, sends a signal.
☐ Weakness: no recourse, and a wrong instant ban of a real member is reputation damage you rarely undo.
The tradeoff: ladders are fair but exploitable; instant bans are decisive but unforgiving.
The rule: intent-based, not severity-based. Honest mistake → ladder. Bad intent → instant. Write the line down so mods don't improvise it differently each time.
