Open join vs application gate: tune by quality cost
An application is friction. Friction is a filter. The question: does a bad member cost you more than a lost good one?
Decide by quality cost:
☐ High cost per bad member (spam ruins the room, trust is the product) → application gate.
☐ Low cost per bad member, network effects need volume → open join.
Application gate strengths: pre-qualifies, raises baseline quality, members feel they 'earned' entry (better retention).
Weakness: cuts join volume 50-80%, and a queue you don't review fast becomes a dead funnel.
Open join strengths: maximum top-of-funnel, instant gratification.
Weakness: you moderate quality after the fact, which is slower and more public.
The hybrid: open join + a soft gate (first post must pass a bot rule). You get volume and a filter without a manual review queue.
Never run an application gate you can't review within 24 hours.
Save this for your next launch.
