Q: I added all my cluster links in a "related posts" footer widget. Doesn't that connect the cluster?
Short answer: partly, but footer and sidebar widgets carry far less weight than contextual in-body links, and relying on them alone is a common shortcut that underperforms.
Boilerplate link blocks that appear site-wide are easy for search engines to discount — they're navigation, not editorial endorsement. A link inside a sentence, surrounded by relevant text, signals genuine topical relationship.
In practice:
— Put your most important cluster links in the body copy, where they're contextually anchored.
— Use the "related posts" widget as a supplement, not the main mechanism.
— When you mention a subtopic you've covered elsewhere, link it right there in the prose.
The quick check: would the link still make sense to a human reading that exact sentence? If yes, it's contextual. If it only works in a generic widget, it's weaker.
