Q: My pillar page is a 600-word overview with links out. Why does it rank worse than the cluster pages it links to?
Short answer: a pillar that's just a link directory has no standalone value, so it can't outrank pages that actually answer something.
A good pillar does two jobs at once: it ranks for the broad head term itself, and it organizes the cluster. A 600-word link list does neither — it's too thin to rank and too shallow to demonstrate authority.
In practice: a pillar should comprehensively answer the broad query while linking out to depth. Cover the full subtopic landscape in a few sentences each, then link to the cluster article that goes deep. Aim for genuine completeness, not arbitrary word count — but a real pillar is usually 2,000+ words because the topic demands it. If your pillar reads like a sitemap, it's a navigation page, not a pillar.
