Refreshing old content vs publishing new: which recovers authority faster?
Question: when a topic area decays, is it better to refresh existing pages or publish fresh ones?
Evidence: Content-decay analyses (comparing 90-day click/impression windows) suggest refreshing wins when the page already has link equity and ranks positions 5–15 — these recover fastest, often within a crawl cycle or two. Pages stuck beyond position 30 rarely recovered from a refresh alone; new, better-structured pages outperformed them. Across one decay dataset, refresh ROI was concentrated almost entirely in the "striking distance" band.
Nuance: refresh is a leverage play on existing equity, not a resurrection spell. The position of the decaying page is the best predictor of which path pays.
Method note: GSC 90-day decay comparison segmented by starting position band.
Caveat: refresh quality varies wildly; "updated the date" is not a refresh.
Confidence: medium
