Depth vs breadth on a fixed budget: where does the marginal article pay off?

Depth vs breadth on a fixed budget: where does the marginal article pay off?

Question: with budget for 20 articles, do you go deep (fewer, exhaustive pieces) or broad (more pages covering more sub-topics)?

Evidence: Correlation studies of top-10 results consistently find word count is a weak standalone signal (often r below 0.1), but topic coverage — how many sub-questions a page answers vs the SERP average — tracks rankings more reliably. Across two content datasets, breadth-first sites that established many entity pages first, then deepened winners, reached topical authority faster than depth-first sites that polished a few monoliths.

Nuance: this is sequencing, not a verdict. Breadth establishes the entity footprint; depth defends positions once you rank. Going deep on a topic the site has zero coverage breadth for tends to underperform.

Method note: two content/ranking datasets, coverage scored against SERP-average sub-topics.

Caveat: confounded by domain strength; new sites and aged sites behave differently.

Confidence: low
