Wikidata entry vs schema sameAs: which moves the entity-recognition needle?
Question: to get a brand or author recognized as a known entity, is creating a Wikidata item more effective than just adding sameAs links in your schema?
Evidence: These do different jobs. A Wikidata item (the open structured database many AI systems and the Knowledge Graph ingest) can seed recognition where none existed. sameAs in your JSON-LD (the property linking your entity to its profiles elsewhere) mostly confirms an identity Google already suspects. In entity-profiling work, the pages that achieved Knowledge Panel recognition almost always had corroborating mentions across independent sources — neither Wikidata nor sameAs alone was sufficient.
Nuance: sameAs is necessary hygiene; Wikidata is a seed; corroborating third-party mentions are the actual fuel. Adding sameAs to an unknown entity rarely creates recognition by itself.
Method note: pattern from multiple entity-profile audits scoring presence across Wikidata, Knowledge Graph, and sameAs.
Caveat: causation hard to isolate; recognition is multi-signal.
Confidence: low
