Search-volume data: Google's own vs clickstream tools:
Keyword Planner vs Ahrefs/Semrush volumes — I compared 50 keywords against my actual GSC impressions.
Keyword Planner (Google)
➕ Straight from the source, free with an Ads account
➕ Best for commercial intent — it's literally for ad buyers
➖ Bucketed ranges (1K-10K) unless you spend; useless precision
Clickstream tools (Ahrefs/Semrush)
➕ Precise-looking numbers + "clicks" metric (volume that actually gets clicked)
➕ Difficulty + parent-topic context in one view
➖ Modeled estimates — they were 30-50% off my real impressions on long-tail
Best for: paid-intent sizing → Planner. Content planning + difficulty → clickstream tool.
Price-vs-value: neither is "truth." The clickstream "clicks" metric beat raw volume for predicting traffic in my test — that's the number to trust.
Pick this if you write content: a clickstream tool's clicks metric. Skip raw "volume" — it overstates info-intent terms.
Tested on a real, live site.
