Ahrefs vs Screaming Frog for redistributing internal link equity
A money page was buried. I tested both on the real site to plan internal links.
Screaming Frog
➕ Crawl depth + inlinks count showed the page sat 5 clicks deep with only 3 internal links
➖ No authority weighting on its own
Ahrefs
➕ Best-by-links and the internal "link opportunities" report suggested high-traffic donor pages
➖ Internal link data less granular than a full Frog crawl
The case: Frog proved the page was orphan-ish; Ahrefs identified 12 high-traffic posts to link FROM. We added contextual links and pulled the page to click-depth 2. 7 weeks later it climbed from position 19 to 6 for a ~3,000-volume commercial term — no new backlinks, just rewired internal links.
Best for: Frog to diagnose depth, Ahrefs to pick strong donors.
Price-vs-value: Pure internal-link work — zero ad spend, fastest ROI move available.
Pick both together for internal-link projects.
Skip buying links before you've fixed your own internal mesh.
