Moz vs Ahrefs for link prospecting: which metric wasted less budget?
I tested both on a real outreach campaign, scoring 200 prospect domains.
Moz (Domain Authority + Spam Score)
➕ Spam Score flagged 30 sketchy domains fast
➖ DA correlated weakly with actual ranking lift on our placements
Ahrefs (Domain Rating + traffic)
➕ DR plus organic-traffic estimate killed 45 "high-DA" domains that pulled near-zero real traffic
➖ No dedicated spam metric
The case: Moz's DA would've greenlit 45 zero-traffic domains. I re-scored on Ahrefs traffic instead and only pursued domains with 1k+ monthly visits. Of 28 links landed, the traffic-filtered set referred 600+ real visitors and 5 placements directly moved target keywords. The DA-only list, in a prior campaign, had moved nothing.
Best for: Ahrefs traffic for value; Moz Spam Score as a cheap junk filter.
Price-vs-value: Filtering on traffic, not DA, saved roughly half the outreach effort.
Pick Ahrefs traffic estimates to qualify prospects.
Skip judging a link target on authority score alone — check real traffic.
