A targeted lurker reactivation ping and its honest conversion rate

A targeted lurker reactivation ping and its honest conversion rate

A 2025 case from a 45,000-member Telegram community ran a one-time reactivation effort: identifying members who hadn't messaged in 60+ days and surfacing a pinned 'tell us what you want here' prompt plus a curated highlight of best recent threads. Tracked 6 weeks.

What the data shows
— Of the dormant segment, roughly 4% posted at least once in the following two weeks.
— Of those reactivated, about 35% were still active at week 6 — meaning net durable reactivation was ~1.4% of the dormant pool.
— No measurable change in the never-dormant core's behavior.

Why it happens
Most lurkers are lurkers by preference, not by friction — they consume and won't convert regardless of prompting. The small slice that does reactivate tends to be people who drifted for circumstantial reasons, and a well-timed nudge plus a reason to return (the highlight reel) can recover them.

The caveat
A 1.4% durable conversion is honest but humbling — reactivation campaigns are widely oversold. Telegram caps mass-pinging before it reads as spam, so this isn't repeatable monthly. Six weeks barely tests durability.

Open question: is dormant-member reactivation ever worth the effort versus pouring the same energy into retaining members during their first active week, when intent is highest?
