Why it spread: two columns look shorter on screen, and "shorter feels easier."

The boring truth: eyes read forms in a single vertical line. Two columns create an ambiguous path - left-then-right or down-then-up? - and people skip, mis-fill, or abandon. The right column was a graveyard of half-finished fields.

The nuance the layout advice skipped: the one exception is tightly paired data, like First/Last name or City/State, where the relationship is obvious. Everything else goes single-column. Looking shorter cost more than being longer ever would.
