Finance site had 200 great articles, zero structure. Flat root, every article an island. Strong content, no topical signal.

What I shipped:
— 8 pillar hub pages, one per money topic
— Each hub links to its 15-30 supporting articles; every article links back up to its hub
— Breadcrumbs reflecting hub > article

3 months: the 8 hubs themselves ranked top 5 for head terms they'd never targeted. Supporting articles averaged +40% clicks from the new internal link flow.

The hub has to be genuinely useful — real content, not a bare link list. A thin hub gets ignored by Google and users both.
