Found 740 orphan pages in the logs. 740 in the sitemap, 0 internal links.
News-ish content site. Sitemap listed 6,200 URLs. I crawled the site's actual link graph and found 740 of them had ZERO internal links pointing in — orphans only reachable via sitemap.
Move:
— Built a "related" module pulling 4 contextual links into every article
— Added a topic-archive page per cluster linking all members
— Cross-checked the crawl again to confirm orphan count hit zero
9 weeks: those 740 orphans went from avg position 31 to 19. Combined clicks up ~1,400/mo.
Sitemap inclusion is not internal linking. Google treats sitemap-only URLs as low-priority. Wire them into the actual click path.
