Case #019: The three frames that doubled the account
A video offer was underperforming and I was sure the problem was the offer. $3,600 spent, $2,400 back, a 33% loss. We'd tested four landers and three audiences. The one thing we hadn't touched was the first three seconds of the video.
The hook was a slow brand intro — a logo, a fade, a calm voice. In a feed where the average view lasted 1.4 seconds, the ad was spending its only moment on a logo nobody waited for. The 3-second view rate was 8%. Ninety-two percent of people scrolled past before the message even started.
We cut the intro. The new version opened mid-action, on the single most surprising frame of the entire video — no logo, no fade, just the payoff first.
The re-cut hook moved one metric, and it cascaded:
— 3-second view rate jumped from 8% to 29%
— more views meant more completions, more completions meant more clicks
— cost per sale dropped from $51 to $24
Nothing else in the funnel changed. The lander, the offer, the audience, all identical. We just stopped wasting the only three seconds that mattered.
Full run after the re-cut:
— $9,100 spent
— $16,400 revenue
— 80% ROI
The lesson: in video, the first three seconds aren't an introduction, they're the whole auction for attention — open on the payoff, never the logo.
