Adding the cost of inaction to the hook lifted completion 21%
Here's what happened with a small-business creator. His hook stated a tip plainly: "Register your business as an LLC." Useful, dull, skippable. Completion: 29%.
The thing about a flat instruction is there's no consequence attached, so there's no urgency to stay. We rewrote it to name the stakes of ignoring it: "Not having an LLC just cost a guy I know his house — here's the 10-minute fix."
And then the threat of losing a house made the 10-minute fix feel non-optional. People stayed to make sure they weren't the next guy.
The result: completion went from 29% to 50%, and the video outperformed his channel average by 4x.
The lesson: attach a concrete consequence to the hook — people don't watch for tips, they watch to avoid losing something.
