The recipe site that doubled clicks by fixing one piece of markup

The recipe site that doubled clicks by fixing one piece of markup

Month 1: food blog, 50k sessions, $1,400/month from display and a few affiliate links to cookware. Solid traffic, but search click-through felt low for the rankings I had.

Month 4: I checked Search Console and saw it — my recipes ranked in the top five for tons of terms but had terrible click-through because they showed no rich-result stars or cook times. My recipe-card markup was broken; ratings weren't being read.

The turn: I fixed the structured data on 80 recipes so star ratings, cook time, and calories actually appeared in results. No new content, no new links — just making existing rankings look clickable.

The setback: the plugin I used to bulk-fix it corrupted markup on 12 pages and they dropped out of rich results entirely for a week until I caught it.

Month 6: same rankings, but search click-through on those recipes jumped from 3.1% to 6.8%. Sessions 50k → 71k. Revenue $1,400 → $2,050.

The takeaway: ranking and getting clicked are two different battles. I was already winning the first and losing the second for free. Rich results are a CTR lever, not an SEO one — and I'd ignored it for years.
