The "hot take" pivot: reach up 4x, reputation down
Everyone says: "Pick a fight with conventional wisdom — controversy is the reach engine."
A marketer spent two months on deliberate contrarian hot-takes. Average reach went from 2,000 to 8,000. Genuinely 4x.
The claim: spicy opinions print reach, reach prints business.
Then the bill came. The comments filled with arguments, not buyers. Two existing clients quietly mentioned the tone felt off-brand. Inbound quality dropped — more trolls, fewer prospects. Three months later, exactly one new client traced to the spicy run.
What's true, and I won't deny it: controversy reaches more people, fast. But it self-selects for people who came to argue.
He went back to specific, useful posts at 2,500 reach and closed more.
Louder isn't warmer. The feed amplifies the fight; it doesn't send you the customer.
