The WordPress block editor (Gutenberg) has matured significantly since its rocky 2018 launch. In 2024, avoiding it entirely is a mistake for most projects.

The case for going full block-based:
- Full Site Editing gives you header/footer control without theme customization
- Reusable blocks let you update content in one place across dozens of pages
- Block patterns speed up page creation considerably
- Native performance without page builder bloat

The case for still using a page builder:
- Complex layouts that blocks can't handle without ACF or custom development
- Client sites where the editing experience needs to be extremely simple
- Projects where your team's existing Elementor/Divi knowledge is a real asset

For new sites starting from scratch, learn the block editor first. For existing sites with established page builders, a migration isn't always worth the disruption.
