Deep dive: the case where a model's gaze direction moved attention to the headline

Deep dive: the case where a model's gaze direction moved attention to the headline

The question: can a photo direct where users look, and does that change conversion? Eye-tracking work widely circulated in UX circles (notably studies by James Breeze) tested a baby-product ad two ways. In the first, the baby faced forward, out of the page; viewers fixated on the cute face and largely ignored the headline and copy. In the second, the baby was turned to look toward the headline. Viewers' gaze followed the baby's gaze — fixations on the headline and call-to-action rose sharply.

The mechanism is gaze cueing, a deeply automatic social reflex: when we see a face looking somewhere, we look there too, within milliseconds and without deciding to. It's the same instinct that makes a whole room turn when one person stares at the door. A face on a lander is a double-edged asset — it draws the eye powerfully, but if it faces the viewer, it traps attention on itself; if it faces the content, it pumps attention into the message.

This extends beyond faces. Arrows, lines, and even the implied direction of a pointing hand act as directional cues that steer the F-pattern scan toward the element you most want seen.

The practical implication for affiliate landers using people imagery: never let your hero person look out at the user — point their gaze at the headline, the form, or the CTA. The same photo can either hijack attention or hand it to your offer, depending purely on which way the eyes point. It's one of the cheapest above-the-fold edits available.

TL;DR
— Breeze's eye-tracking: a forward-facing face trapped attention on itself; turning it to face the headline pushed fixations onto the copy and CTA.
— Gaze cueing is automatic — we look where faces look, within milliseconds.
— Orient any hero person's gaze toward your headline/CTA, and use arrows or lines as directional cues to steer the scan.
