Deep dive: the case where moving the CTA below the fold raised conversions
The question that violates the rule everyone repeats: should the CTA always be above the fold? Conversion research from teams like ContentVerve (whose tests are widely cited in CRO literature) found a striking exception. On a complex, high-consideration offer, moving the primary CTA further down — below the fold, after the value explanation — lifted conversions by around 20%. On a simple offer, the same move hurt.
The mechanism is information-to-commitment ratio. A CTA asks for a decision. People only decide once they have enough information to justify the action. For a simple, low-risk offer ('get the free PDF'), that threshold is reached instantly, so an above-the-fold button converts. For a complex or expensive offer, asking before explaining triggers perceived risk — the user isn't ready, sees the ask as premature, and the button becomes a source of resistance rather than progress.
This is why generic 'put the CTA above the fold' advice fails on half of real landers. The right position is wherever the user crosses from 'I don't have enough info' to 'I'm convinced' — and on a considered offer, that point is several scroll-lengths down.
The practical implication for affiliate landers: map your offer's complexity first. For impulse offers, lead with the button. For considered offers, lead with the argument and place the primary CTA at the moment of peak conviction — then repeat it at the bottom for users who scrolled to verify. The fold is not a magic line; the conviction point is.
TL;DR
— A documented test moved the CTA below the fold on a complex offer and gained ~20%; the same move hurt a simple offer.
— The driver is information-to-commitment ratio: people decide only after they have enough info to justify the action.
— Place the primary CTA at the conviction point — instant for impulse offers, several scrolls down for considered ones.
