Promising 'number 4 surprised me' in the hook held people 11s longer
Let me tell you about a tech reviewer running a 5-gadget roundup. His hook was flat: "Here are 5 gadgets under $20." People watched one or two and left. Average view duration: 14 seconds on a 40-second video.
Here's the thing — a list with no tension lets you leave after any item. So we opened a loop in the hook itself: "5 gadgets under $20 — but number 4 actually made me return the others."
And then people couldn't bail before number 4 without losing the punchline they were promised.
The result: average view duration went from 14s to 25s, and completion nearly doubled because the loop only closed near the end.
The lesson: plant one specific unresolved item in the hook so leaving early means missing the point.
