A webcomic cut from 7 ad slots to 4 — and total revenue went up
More ad slots sound like more money, but they split buyer demand thin and slow the page.
What happened: a webcomic crammed 7 ad slots onto each page. Many showed cheap leftover ads, and the page felt cluttered and slow.
The experiment:
1. Removed the 3 worst-performing slots.
2. Kept the 4 that earned the most.
3. Measured for three weeks.
Result: revenue per thousand views per slot rose sharply, total page revenue went up 5%, and pages loaded faster. Fewer, better ads beat more, cheaper ones.
In plain English: stacking ad slots can starve each one. Sometimes removing weak slots raises the whole page's earnings.
