Deep dive: the multi-column form that quietly slowed everyone down — and the fix

The question: do multi-column forms save space or cost completions? Eye-tracking work commissioned and published by CXL (a CRO research firm) compared single-column and multi-column form layouts. The single-column version was completed faster — in their study, users finished it in meaningfully less time — and faster completion correlates strongly with higher completion rates in form research.

The mechanism is predictable scan flow. A single column gives the eye one job: go straight down. A multi-column layout forces a decision at every field — do I go right, or down? That ambiguity breaks the natural F-pattern and zig-zag scan, and each micro-decision adds cognitive load. Worse, side-by-side fields are easy to misread as related when they aren't, causing errors, and form errors are a top abandonment cause because they reintroduce perceived risk ('did I do something wrong?').

There's a documented exception researchers flag: genuinely related short fields (city / state / zip) can sit on one line without harm, because they read as a single logical unit. The damage comes from breaking unrelated fields across columns to look compact.

The practical implication for affiliate landers: default every form to a single column. Reserve horizontal grouping for fields that are conceptually one item. The space you 'save' with columns is paid back in slower completion and higher error rates — and on a lander, a slower form is an abandoned form.

TL;DR
— CXL eye-tracking found single-column forms completed faster than multi-column, and faster correlates with higher completion.
— Multi-column layouts add a 'right or down?' decision at every field, breaking scan flow and raising error rates.
— Default to single column; only group genuinely related fields (city/state/zip) on one line.
